Avalon School

Enterprise Advisor – Nik Harwood, Young Somerset

At Avalon School we have a superb enterprise performance history and have donated a significant pot of money to the School Trust, which is fundraising for a new playground.  Our students across all key stages are supported to develop ideas, make plans, create product, think about packaging and marketing, make informed choices about costings and budgets and go out and sell what they have made, whether that is in a café or at the most recent pop-up shop.

Enterprise is a valuable part of the learning experiences for all students at Avalon School.  It forms part of our careers programme that aims to prepare students for the world of work and adulthood.  Enterprise promotes many skills which includes:

  • Teamwork - working with other people.
  • Creativity –a lot of our products start as a sensory experience or are made on a production line with tasks broken down into small chunks
  • Communication - listening to others, sharing ideas and opinions.
  • Management of money including budgeting.
  • Quality assurance - ensuring production of high-quality products.
  • Customer relations - learning how to work with members of the public.

The Enterprise work for students in Key Stage 4 and Post 16 is put together to form a portfolio for accreditation.

Our art work on large canvases, in frames and on bags, cards and mugs is hugely popular and Avalon School continues to sell these beautiful pieces in a variety of venues.

Over the last couple of years we have joined up with other SEN.se schools to run pop-up shops across the county. The first was in Taunton and was a hugely successful venture, which encouraged us then to take a short lease on shops in The Quedam Centre in Yeovil, in Frome and then at Angel Place in Bridgwater.  The SEN.se Preparation for Adulthood Group are currently developing an online shop for each school to use to sell their products.  This year, Avalon School will be providing products to a new retail venture opening in Taunton and run by Young Somerset.

The pop-up shops and retail opportunities like these give our young people a real and meaningful experience of working in manufacturing and retail and engaging with peers across a network of schools and the wider community.  If you feel that you could help us in any way with our Enterprise, either by donating materials, volunteering to help us in class or offering us local shop space please do get in touch – office@avalonsch.uk
